College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) Seal Description

The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) logo is an emblem type logo with a combination of text and symbols inside a “Circle”. The “Circle” is symbolic of perpetuity of knowledge for which the college is of service. This is in line with its first objective: “provide quality instruction geared towards the development of the students’ core and relevant competencies and potentials.”

Inside the “Circle” are the following:

  1. The “Torch” draws its meaning from its traditional symbolism which is “enlightenment” and “hope”, the hinges for its fourth objective: “provide the proper venue for the students to think critically in the acquisition of knowledge and the development of skills, values and attitudes, and live and lead a life that will promote social conscience and responsibility.”
  2. The text that reads “1948” pertains to the year Notre Dame University (NDU) was founded whereupon it mainly taught courses traditionally offered through the College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) such as English 1, Ethics as Philosophy 1, Educational Psychology and Logic, Spanish, Music and Educational methods, Political Science and History, Mathematics.
  3. The text that reads “College of Arts & Sciences” arching downward at the bottom edge of the “Circle,” and occupying half of the “Circle” indicates that the college is the seat of everything the other elements inside the logo symbolize.
  4. The text that reads “Arts & Sciences” in the “Torch” represents the university’s early beginnings as a liberal arts college. More importantly, it symbolizes the College’s second objective: “foster the appreciation of arts, and develop proper and reasonable application of the sciences through varied teaching-learning activities.”
